Readers 2 Leaders Coaching: Let’s Partner!

The literacy crisis in Dallas is much bigger than R2L. That's why we started Readers 2 Leaders Coaching!

We can work with your staff and volunteers to train you in how to provide literacy intervention and enrichment to students in your out-of-school-time program. We’re launching our cohort model in fall 2019. We believe every program that works with children has the potential to transform lives through literacy. Let's get to work!

What is Readers 2 Leaders Coaching?

  • Readers 2 Leaders Coaching is a new program that will help us reach hundreds more students each year through partnerships. R2L staff will train program staff at partner after-school and summer programs to deliver high-quality reading instruction, so they can impact literacy outcomes for students.

  • Coaching will launch using a cohort model, meaning we will identify a group of providers and work with them as a group and individually for an entire semester or summer. We will also provide one-time trainings, enrichment training, and curriculum writing. Through all of these efforts, we will give caring adults who are already working with children exactly the right tools to serve students.

Why literacy? Why now?

  • Dallas is facing a reading emergency. 93,000 kindergarten through third graders in Dallas County are behind in reading — enough to completely sell out ATT stadium.

  • Third graders who are behind in reading are 4-6 times less likely to graduate from high school.

What has Readers 2 Leaders Coaching accomplished so far?

  • We have piloted training with 3 partners serving 250 students.

  • We have trained 100 summer providers to help 1000 students through a partnership with Dallas Afterschool to expand literacy training across Dallas County this summer.

  • We have shared our plans with an audience of 1200 through United Way’s The Pitch.

  • We have received seed funding from United Way, Social Venture Partners, and two donors.

  • We have hired key staff, including a Coaching Director who will lead implementation of the program.

What’s next for Readers 2 Leaders Coaching?

  • This fall we will launch our cohort model with five partner sites. We will provide more than 125 hours of group and one-on-one training, coaching and support to key staff at five partner sites. R2L staff will directly serve 60 students through our adapted curriculum, and the professionals we train will work with at least 60 more students in need of help this semester alone.

  • Over the next 12 months we plan to operate a second cohort in the spring and provide enrichment training and support in summer 2020. Our goal is to provide direct and indirect literacy support to 1500 students this year through Coaching!
